The coronavirus is creating all sorts of new challenges to businesses and one that is easy to slip under the radar if not managed correctly is the risk from Legionella in on site water systems.

The restrictions on movement of people has led to further reductions in building occupancy therefore increasing the risk of colonisation by Legionella.

All employers still have a duty of care to manage the risks from Legionella although the controls in place may need to be adapted to changing circumstances.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia caused by the inhalation of small droplets of contaminated water containing Legionella bacteria.

All hot and cold-water systems such as; Air conditioning systems, Spa pools and hot tubs and Showers, taps and toilets are likely, if not controlled appropriately, to provide an environment where Legionella can grow.
