How do we approach First Response Emergency Care (FREC) Level 3 training?

FREC (First Response Emergency Care) level 3 will teach you the life-saving skills and techniques of a first responder within a pre-hospital scenario.

Traditionally, a first responder is the initial personnel to arrive at an emergency scene, commonly, police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel. However, it could also be those with medical responsibility at work, individuals working in high-risk area, those in voluntary or community activities as well as roles within high-risk workplaces such as law enforcement and security.

FREC 3 is also the entry-level stage of the First Responder Emergency Care (FREC) pathway and suitable for individuals looking to progress to higher level training. For example, registration as a paramedic and careers within the emergency services.

Our course programme employs a variety of teaching techniques to meet the needs of individual delegates and includes the following:

• Roles and responsibilities of a first responder, including recording incidents & patient specific documentation
• Patient assessment – Primary Survey (ABCDE) & Secondary Survey
• Incident assessment and control
• To be able to assess and manage patients with life-threating and non-life-threatening illness and injuries, including
  • trauma emergencies
  • bleeding and catastrophic bleeding
  • chest injuries
  • crush injuries
  • wounds and eye injuries
  • burns or scalds
  • embedded objects
  • fractures, sprains, strains, and dislocations
  • poisoning
  • head, spinal, and musculoskeletal injuries
  • patients with breathing and extreme breathing difficulties
  • anaphylaxis
  • asthma
  • hyperventilation
  • heart attack
  • angina
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • seizures
  • meningitis
  • patients with suspected major illness
  • a patient who is actively convulsing
  • how to provide emergency care for the effects of environmental exposure

• To be able to administer CPR
• To safely use an AED during a resuscitation attempt and how to maintain an AED ready for use

Owing to the practical nature of this course a basis level of general fitness is required.  Delegates must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in the course outline.  Should you have any questions relating to the accessibility of this course please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

On completion of the course, you will receive a FREC Level 3 Certificate endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, valid for 3 years. After this time, you will be able to take the FREC 3 Requalification course to remain qualified.

This course is of 5 days duration.

We can provide a wide variety of accredited or tailor-made courses, these can be ‘in-house’ or ‘open’ programmes.

Our ‘in-house’ course programmes are the most cost effective option if you’ve a number of staff requiring training, and in many cases can be adapted to include reference to local policy, practice and documentation.  These courses can be delivered either at any suitable venue or you can hire our purpose-built training centre located in Warmley, Bristol, whichever is best suited to your needs.

We also run a rolling programme of ‘open courses’ which are particularly suited for individuals, organisations that only have a few delegates or those looking to release small groups of staff at a time.
